TEAM MYLES YOUTH RUN - SHANNON PARK SCHOOL
Shannon Park School is located in Dartmouth near the McKay Bridge on the grounds of the former Shannon Park Military Base and community. The student population is 480, and is the French Immersion site for students who live within the boundaries of Dartmouth. Approximately 400 students study "en français, with about 80 learning in English. The school has a rich history in performing arts and presently has a student African Drumming group that visits and performs at various schools throughout the HRM. The school can be visited online at http://www.shannonpark.ednet.ns.ca/ .
École Shannon Park School supports the achievement of a healthy lifestyle for all students. Along with studies aligned with the provincial curriculum in healthy living, students can participate in a breakfast program ensuring a nutritious start to their day and a Hot Lunch program three times a year which features a healthy lunch with their class served by volunteers. The school is presently setting up a lunchroom, as part of a Food for Life initiative. Future plans include the provision of healthy supplements to the lunches students bring, and visits from local celebrities and sports figures to pass along healthy eating messages. Along with two regular physical education classes per week, students can have the opportunity to participate in intramural sports and special events hosted by the school throughout the year such a cooperative games program, a visit from the Halifax Rainmen and golf instruction in the Spring 2008 from the NSGA.
The goal for the Seven Team Myles participants is to provide leadership for all our student body by modeling commitment and diligence in working towards a healthy and active lifestyle, culminating in their participating in the Youth Run as part of the Bluenose Marathon. The entire school population is encouraged to train along with the official team during our proposed school day training activities and by following the guidelines for a healthy diet.
