First Entry
Weight Loss: Trina down 5 lbs, Richard down 9 lbs from start of training.
My name is Trina and I am training for the BlueNose Marathon 10K with my husband, Richard. We both knew for a long time that we needed to do something to get back in shape and develop a healthier lifestyle. Our first child, a daughter named Isabella, just turned 1 year old and we both hadn't lost the baby weight! For her sake, and to set a good example for her, we wanted to get moving.
Team Myles presented a great opportunity for us to do just that. The support that we will receive is phenomenal and we know that we have people watching us - so it is not easy for us to give up (and that is a very good thing!). Also, having us both do it is a bonus because we can cheer each other on and give each other a kick in the butt if needed.
Starting Training:
During the past two weeks, Richard and I had an orientation and the gym and met with our Personal Trainer. She developed a great workout for us to do together at the gym - encompassing strength training and cardio. We also met with our Life Coach who was excellent! He was very helpful in showing us what we could do better with respect to nutrition and eating right. He also developed a great 14 week training schedule to prepare for the 10K.
However, Richard and I are finding it a bit difficult to consistently get moving. He is doing much better than I am in getting out in the cold for runs, but we are both going to the gym - two times per week for the past couple of weeks, and that has been great. I've also been struggling with a migraine for the past few days, so I haven't been able to get out to the gym or for a run. Tomorrow is a new day, though, and I will be back on track then.
One major change we have done is with respect to our eating habits. Like many people, we ate what we wanted, when we wanted. Now, we are both trying to eat healthier. Richard is cutting down on the snacks and I am trying to eat more balanced meals. Though we haven't been completely successful in reaching those goals, we are both making headway.

Weight Loss (TOTAL): Trina down 10 lbs, Richard down 20 lbs
Well, it has been a while since we wrote last. I guess that is due to the fact that we didn't want to have to say that we have been having trouble getting out and getting going. The truth is that still is the case. We have been able to get out a bit, running and walking on our own. However, we are struggling with getting out together and focusing on training.
Let's see, there was the weather to contend with. Snow, cold, rain, more snow. It is difficult to get motivated to go out when you have just spent an hour shovelling, or have just warmed up for the trip home after work.
There are also the injuries. Richard hurt his side running last week and I ended up with a strained knee. The knee thing was my fault - it was a bit sore and I ran on it anyway. I will know for next time that I should take it easy at the "bit sore" stage to save myself a week of pain and hobbling up and down the stairs.
With all that said, I think that we have learned to not push ourselves too much, to find a way to get motivated to get out, and to try harder to train together. The reason we wanted to be on Team Myles together was so that we could motivate each other. Our goal for the next couple of weeks will be to get back on track doing that.

There have been many changes in the past month and a half in our training for the BlueNose 10K. Richard has had to drop out of the race due to medical issues. This has obviously changed my training and plans for the race. I have been training on my own since late March and I am still committed to doing my best in the race and getting through it.
Unfortunately, I was also hit with illness. Two weeks ago I was told I had the beginning stages of pneumonia. Two days later, and feeling worse than ever, I found out I also had the flu. The combination of the two knocked me off of my feet and I am only now coming out of it.
Since I haven't been able to run in two and a half weeks, I am starting to get REALLY stressed about running the race. I am trying to remind myself that I had some good training in before I got sick, and that I still have a little under four weeks left. So, I am going to head back out tonight, starting slowly, and trying to get some ground and distance under me.

The Home Stretch
There have been a few more changes since my last blog. In addition to Richard having to back out, I found myself facing a very big decision - continue with my goal of 10K or move down to 5K. With only 3 weeks of training left when I was actually able to get back out and train after being ill, it seemed like the mountain in front of me (the 10K!) was insurmountable. I was still committed to doing it, but I didn't know how I would manage.
After speaking with my family and the Team Myles Life Coach, I made the decision that I should move down to the 5K. Given the time frame (3 weeks left) and where I was at physically, it was the move that made the most sense. I was disappointed, but as it was pointed out to me, running the 10K or even running the complete 5K does not mean success. Instead, I had to realize that I really have come a long way from where I was in January. I have lost weight and discovered that I CAN run - and, even more surprising, that I LIKE it!
I had a great run yesterday. I ran longer than I ever have and, thought I was wiped out when I was done, I actually thought to myself that if the finish line was in front of me, I could do even more! What a great feeling to have an build upon as I go through the last week and a half before race day.

I DID IT!
Race day has come and gone and I am still excited that I was able to finish the 5K. It was a very gruelling race for me, as I was not used to running under the hot sun (my favourite time to run is later in the evening when the sun is down and it is cool!).
I also learned a very valuable lesson about getting to the race site early and having a chance to relax before the starting gun as I was running a bit late and had to move quite quickly to get into the queue as the race was starting. It wasn't a very auspicious start to my first road race.
Given the weather and the start, I was unable to do the running/walking sets that I had trained for. This left me really frustrated early on, but I tried to kick that feeling by telling myself that it didn't matter if I ran the whole way or walked, just finishing would be a triumph.
And so I pushed on. Halfway through the course I was cheered on by my baby, husband Richard, and mom. It was such a great thing to see them on the course and really gave me the lift I needed to go on and finish the race within the time I had set for myself.
All in all, this experience has been wonderful. I am already looking forward to my next 5K! I never thought I would even be able to run and so it has been quite fulfilling to be a part of Team Myles.
