The Full Marathon and the Volkswagen Half Marathon begin together at 9:00 AM in downtown Halifax, at the Brunswick Street START - FINISH LINE, in front of the historic Town Clock located on Citadel Hill. This is a beautiful and somewhat hilly Race Route that will allow you to experience the new and historic neighborhoods and interesting sites of Halifax and Dartmouth.
Starting the race, you will head south on Brunswick Street, west (right) on Sackville Street, running around the base of Citadel Hill by following Bell Road and Ahern Avenue by the new Citadel High School. You will then proceed north onto North Park Street, beside the Halifax Commons. The route will then continue north on Agricola Street to Russell Street right down to Barrington Street, through the Naval Dockyard and then south along Hollis Street to the Atlantic SuperStore, having passed the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Province House (Nova Scotia's legislature), Government House (NS Lieutenant Governor"s residence) and Keith Hall (of Keiths India Pale Ale fame).
You'll then continue south (left) around the SuperStore, down Barrington Street and right on to Inglis Street all the way over to Young Avenue. South (left) on Young to the gatehouse to Point Pleasant Park turning left to head back towards the harbour and to start your tour through Point Pleasant Park. Continuing along Shore Road, the route passes the waterfront war memorial and then continues into Arm Road. Proceeding North along Arm Road, the pathway comes to Serpentine Road where a right turn sends the route curving up through an "S" to Cambridge Road. Proceeding left on Cambridge Road, the course comes to a right hand turn on to Lodge Road, passing the fountain, which brings the course back to Young Avenue
Crossing Inglis Street you are now on South Park Street passing South Street, Morris Street, Spring Garden Road and up to Sackville Street. Bearing left on Bell Road you head for Ahern Street and up to North Park Street. Heading north on North Park, it becomes Agricola Street. Keep going north, crossing North Street headed for Russell Street, jog right and then left on to Isleville Street north past Young Street and on through the historic Hydrostone area to Cabot Street, turning right over to Novalea Drive. Turning south (right) on Novalea proceed past Young Street (and magically you are now on Gottingen Street), Almon Street and North Street where you turn left on North Street and then right on Brunswick Street for the finish at the Town Clock.
THIS CONCLUDES THE HALF MARATHON ----------------------------------------------------------------
Full marathoners will carry on through the "Finish Line", go west (right) on Sackville Street, running around the base of Citadel Hill. You will then proceed north onto North Park Street, beside the Halifax Commons. The route will then continue north on Agricola Street to North Street, turn right on North and proceed across the Macdonald Bridge. On the bridge, you will have an outstanding view of Halifax Harbour, the Naval Dockyard and the skylines of Dartmouth and Halifax.
Once in Dartmouth, you will head up Nantucket Avenue to School Street and then left on Slayter Street to Woodland Avenue, right (east) on Woodland to Mic Mac Boulevard, behind the Mic Mac Mall area to the Highway 111 overpass. Running under the overpass, you'll enter Shubie Park, a beautiful, wooded parkland near Lake Mic Mac.
You'll exit Shubie Park near Waverley Road and run along Waverley Road to Prince Albert Road, passing both Lake Mic Mac and Lake Banook on your right. After passing Lake Banook, you'll head up Maple Street, known to Blue Nose Marathoners as Giv'er Hill, a steep incline of about 1 km in length. At the top of Maple, you'll head (left) back toward the Macdonald Bridge to return to Halifax. Once you reach the Halifax side of the bridge you'll then turn left (south) on Brunswick Street and run through one of Halifax's oldest and most historic neighbourhoods, back to the Town Clock to the FINISH LINE!
