May 17, 2008, Halifax, NS - Despite a little drizzle, spirits were high as thousands of Nova Scotia youth hit the streets of Halifax early Saturday morning getting the fifth annual Blue Nose International Marathon off to a running start.
The youth took part in the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run, one of six race events that make up Blue Nose race weekend.
"Running is a great sport for kids, it is terrific for your fitness," said Tristan Langley from Central Colchester Junior High, a three year veteran of the youth run.
Approximately 3,000 youth from schools across Nova Scotia participated in the event. The 4.2 km leg was the culmination of months of training for youth who participated in school running programs across the province.
"It was awesome," said Campbell Colpitts who crossed the finish line holding hands with friend Alexander Pheeney.
The youth run began on Brunswick Street in front of Halifax's historic Town Clock located on Citadel Hill. Hundreds of volunteers and spectators were out to cheer on the youth as they crossed the finish line.
Natasha Clarke, Blue Nose youth run co-chair, was thrilled with this year's turnout. "The energy of all of these kids really is inspirational," said Clarke. "This event has become a hallmark of race weekend and really shows that you can embrace a healthy lifestyle at any age."
The Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Running for Fun program helps Nova Scotia youth become more active and learn about healthy lifestyles. Through this program, participants experience the benefits of physical activity, practice eating a balanced diet and learn the fundamentals of running in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere.
"Doctors Nova Scotia is proud to have sponsored all five years of this fantastic event," said Dr. Don Pugsley, president of Doctors Nova Scotia. "All of the runners who took part in the Blue Nose youth run should be very proud of their accomplishments. They have set a very positive example for their friends and families."
The Blue Nose Marathon and race weekend is the largest event of its kind east of Ottawa. Offering something for runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels, the three-day event includes six unique race categories: Scotiabank Full Marathon, Volkswagen Half Marathon, The Chronicle Herald 10k Race, Dempster's 5k Run-Walk, McDonald's Team Relay, and Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run.
