Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run kicks off Blue Nose Marathon Weekend
May 19, 2007, Halifax, NS - On your mark, get set, GIV'ER! The Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run kicked off the Blue Nose Marathon race events early Saturday morning in Halifax's south end. We would like to congratulate this year's first male and female youth run winners, Nicholas Wood and Tristan Langley, both from Colchester County Junior High School.
This year, over 3,000 youth signed up to participate in the youth run. The 4.2 km leg was the culmination of months of hard training for youth who participated in school running programs across Nova Scotia.
The youth run began and ended at Saint Mary's University (SMU) Huskies Stadium and included Point Pleasant Park. Hundreds of volunteers and spectators were out to cheer on the youth as they crossed the finish line.
Natasha Clarke, Blue Nose youth run co-chair was thrilled with this year's turnout. "I love seeing so many kids out running and having fun," said Clarke. "They have so much energy and enthusiasm and are full of life! It's the perfect way to kick off the Bluenose International Marathon weekend!"
Doctors Nova Scotia promoted the youth school running programs designed to help youth experience the fun and healthy benefits of being active with the hope that they will continue to keep physical activity a part of their daily routine.
"All of the runners who took part in the Blue Nose youth run should be very proud of their accomplishments," said Dr. Rhonda Church, president of Doctors Nova Scotia. "It's important to show youth that being healthy and active go hand-in-hand with having fun."
The Blue Nose International Marathon is the peoples marathon - with diversity to encourage and challenge participants at all levels, first timers and seasoned marathoners. The Blue Nose International Marathon ran from May 18-20, 2007 (Victoria Day Weekend) and the weekend's events included: the Full Marathon, the Volkswagen Half Marathon, the Chronicle Herald 10k, the Rogers Wireless 5k Run/Walk, the Head Shoppe YMCA Team Relay and the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run.
