Derek Linders - 52 miles for 52 children

Date: 14/05/2007

Author:

(Halifax, NS) - In 2005, Derek Linders started training for the Blue Nose Marathon to lose weight and get in shape. Today, 100 pounds lighter, Derek is running the full marathon...twice.

At 2 a.m. on May 20, 2007, he'll start the first leg of the marathon accompanied by a few other runners for company and safety. That will give him enough time to run the full course before arriving back at the Start Line to join the other full marathoners for a second loop. His total running time is an estimated 13 hours.

Derek is also hoping to raise $18,000 for Christian Child Care International, an organization that was founded in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia 12 years ago. The 52 mile hell run means that an additional 52 needy children worldwide will benefit from the organization's programs.

"I was looking to push the limits physically," said Linders. "I have become very passionate about Christian Child Care International and the positive impact they have on the lives of children in developing nations. They do more than support individual children - they support the entire communities in the process."

Linders describes his enthusiasm towards exercise as a health awakening from his doctor. He struggled with his weight and was diagnosed with diabetes. Getting his weight to a healthy level was not always easy but Linders now weighs 100 pound less and has his diabetes is under control. He ran his first Blue Nose Marathon in 2005. He never thought he could run more than five minutes, let alone a marathon.

Linders now enjoys activities like mountain orienteering with his two daughters. Now, through determination and perseverance he hopes to one day participate in a 135 mile foot race through California's Death Valley.

He also inspires Nova Scotians to be physically active and believe in their dreams. "Give yourself a chance to surprise yourself. We're capable of so much more than we think we are," Linders tells youth runners at an appearance at Oxford School. His mantra of believing in himself and helping others along the way is an inspiration to many.
