Blue Nose International Marathon overruns Halifax

Halifax, NS - The Blue Nose International Full Marathon, the Volkswagen Half Marathon, the Chronicle Herald 10k, the Rogers Wireless 5k Run/Walk, and the Head Shoppe Team Relay all took place Sunday in front of thousands of eager volunteers and spectators.

 

The main events of the third annual Blue Nose International Marathon all started and finished in front of Halifax's historic town clock on Citadel Hill. Over 5,000 runners took part in the weekend"s festivities.

 

Blue Nose co-chair Gerry Walsh was delighted with this year's participation. "It's so inspiring to see runners share in the experience of the Blue Nose," said Walsh. "I want to thank all of the organizers, volunteers, spectators and runners who had a hand in making this race a success."

 

Rod McCulloch, Blue Nose co-chair, highlighted "It's great to see people of all running abilities participating in an event that showcases our beautiful city. The weather cooperated this year which made the whole event much more exciting and entertaining for everyone."

 

David MacLennan of Scotsburn, Nova Scotia was the first male running in the full marathon to cross the finish line with a time of 2:43:50. This is the second time MacLennan has finished first in the Blue Nose International Marathon. MacLennan won the inaugural event in 2004.

 

Jennifer Winters of Newcastle, ON was the first female running in the full marathon to cross the finish line with a time of 3:21:34.

 

Terry Melloy, Bridgewater, NS was the first male running in the half marathon to cross the finish line with a time of 1:19:23. Cynthia Moulin of Halifax, NS was the first female running in the half marathon to cross the finish line with a time of 1:30:22.

 

Dwayne Parsons of Beechville, NS and Kaitlyn Watters of Westville, NS were the first male and female to finish the 10k with times of 35:21 and 40:03 consecutively.

 

Mark Hines of Dartmouth, NS and Dianne Chaisson of Halifax, NS were the first male and female to finish the 5k with times of 19:23 and 20:41 consecutively.

 

The New Balance Rising Stars Relay Team finished the relay first with a time of 2:42:07.

Over 6,300 people took part in the Blue Nose International Marathon events over the weekend. Registration numbers for each event were:

  • Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run: 2292
  • Rogers Wireless 5K Walk/Run: 466
  • Chronicle Herald 10K: 1089
  • Volkswagen Half Marathon: 1542
  • Head Shoppe Team YMCA Team Relay: 57 Teams
  • Full Marathon: 342

 

The Blue Nose International marathon is the people's marathon -- with diversity to encourage and challenge participants at all levels, first timers and seasoned marathoners.
