Halifax, NS, April 24, 2006 - In honour of National Volunteer Week (April 23-29), the Blue Nose International Marathon thanks its volunteers for their help in years past and encourages them to sign up again this year to provide continued support.
More than 1,000 volunteers will be required to make this year's Blue Nose International Marathon run smoothly, up from the 800 people who volunteered last year. These volunteers spend countless hours both behind the scenes and on the front lines to make sure that the weekend events run smoothly.
"Volunteers provide hospitality and help make participants feel welcome and comfortable - all in keeping with the Blue Nose theme," says Brenda Rowe, Co-Chair of the Volunteer Committee. "They do everything from passing out water and planning the route to providing on course entertainment. Paramedics and massage therapist volunteers also help out on race days," she says.
Lenore Bromley, Co-Chair of the Volunteer Committee knows first hand how much volunteers do for the marathon. "We are so grateful for the many hours volunteers put in to make Blue Nose a world-class event. My favourite part of the event is watching everyone work together during the weekend of the race. We couldn't do make Blue Nose the great event it is without them," she says.
The Blue Nose International Marathon is the people's marathon - with diversity to encourage and challenge participants at all levels, first timers and seasoned marathoners. The Blue Nose International Marathon is set for May 19-21, 2006 (Victoria Day Weekend) and the weekend's events include: the Full Marathon, the Volkswagen Half Marathon, the Chronicle Herald 10k, the Rogers Wireless 5k Run/Walk, the Head Shoppe Team Relay and the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run.
